Womens Hair Loss

Womens hair loss can be a devastating experience. And it's no wonder it's such a devastating experience because society expects this to occur in men only.

When a womens hair loss is viewed by the public they are thought of as being unhealthy or old. However, what much of the public fails to realize is that up to 40% of the female population experiences some sort of hair loss in their lifetime. Whether it be thinning hair, alopecia or other hair loss problems it can be an emotionally debilitating experience.

Women are usually known for having lovely, healthy locks. However, womens hair loss has recently become a common problem that many companies are now focusing on trying to produce products for womens hair loss. Many companies have come to the rescue of these women by offering them options that will help their hair grow back to it's original state.

Companies are realizing that womens hair loss can be reduced or cured or camouflaged and they want to assist in this process. Whether it be through vitamins, wigs or transplants, womens hair loss is a common problem that is recently being addressed in the media.

However, before we determine a cure, we must first understand the cause of womens hair loss. Baldness is due to your genetic make up.

Regardless of the myths you may have heard like brushing the hair too much, shampooing too much or wearing too many hats contributes to hair loss, what must be realized is that Alopecia or hair loss is primarily genetic and is referred to as "Androgenetic Alopecia" in the medical community.

Your hair or lack of hair is determined prior to birth. Your follicles have been genetically programmed as to when, where and how much hair loss or hair growth you will experience in your lifetime. So don’t blame yourself for your baldness if you are experiencing alopecia or other form of baldness, this is not your fault. It is your hormones interaction with the hair follicles that influences hair loss. The vulnerability of the effects of those hormones to the follicles play a large role in men's and womens hair loss.

CAUSES OF HAIR LOSS:

The most common cause of hair loss in men is known as androgenetic alopecia or male pattern baldness which is by far the most common cause of hair loss. It accounts for 95% of hair loss in men and women. However, there are a variety of other causes for hair loss which includes disease, aging, improper hair care, child birth, poor nutrition, and stress. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, contact your doctor immediately!

Improper Hair Care:

Chemicals used for dying, tinting, bleaching, straightening or any other hair-altering procedures can cause the hair to become damaged. This may eventually cause the hair to break off. Whether chemicals used on the hair are done at home or at a salon, excessive exposure to these types of procedures may lead to hair loss.

Also, excessive styling or tight weaves or braided styles that pulls the hair too tightly may also lead to a type of hair loss, called "traction alopecia." As long as this pulling is stopped prior to the scalp scars, the hair will grow back normally. But be warned, scarring can cause permanent hair loss.

Improper Nutrition:

Researcher has determined that some hair loss may be due to insufficient protein or iron in your diet, as well as malnutrition, in general. Excessive yoyo dieting and not eating properly may cause damage. Vitamin deficiencies have been a common cause of hair loss in many women.

Stress

Stress is a common cause of hair loss. Any traumatic experience or excessive stress can lead to hair loss in women. However, it should be noted that stress-induced hair loss is not a cause of male-pattern baldness.

Stress affects the hair of men and women differently. It's been found that women's hair is more sensitive to stress' effects than men's hair. Once possibility that has been stated for this difference is that women who are genetically predisposed towards hair loss will usually have a higher percentage of miniaturized and fragile hair.

Disease and Illness:

It has been a proven fact that illness, medical conditions, as well as treatments and procedures, may lead to hair loss. Some medications may also lead to hair loss.

Hormonal Changes:

Hormonal problems can also be a cause of hair loss. Essentially, having an overactive or under active thyroid gland may cause your hair to fall out. Treatment of the thyroid disease will usually help this hair loss. Out of balance hormones in men (androgens), or female hormones (estrogens) can be a common cause. However, if the hormone imbalance is corrected, the hair loss should stop.

Child Birth:

It has been common for many women to experience hair loss about 3 months after they've had a baby. This too, is caused by hormones. But this is not something to be very concerned about. Basically, during pregnancy the hair that would normally fall out is kept in by high levels of hormones. The hormones are basically returning to their usual normal state prior to the pregnancy and this is when the hairs fall out. Your body will return back to it’s normal state and the cycle repeats itself as it did prior to the pregnancy.

Aging:

It may not be common knowledge but 40% of men have noticeable hair loss by age 35, and 65% by age 60.

When men age, this is known as androgenetic alopecia. It is common with age that many men experience the presence of hair loss-inducing hormones – common in male baldness.

If you are experiencing hair loss, see your doctor or medical practioner immediately so that you can determine the cause and begin treatment.
