Split Ends Are the Enemy - Find the Cause and Treatment
Regardless of whether you are male or female and regardless of whether you have straight or curly hair, split ends are a nuisance to anyone and everyone. Split ends occur when the hair splits at the end of the actual hair strand. It is at this point that the hair is dry and damaged – that is precisely why it has split. It’s lacking moisture. Most people who get split ends have dry or brittle hair. But split ends can also be caused by over styling. This can occur through excessive brushing, brushing the hair when wet or the use of chemicals on the hair. The scientific name for split ends is Trichoptlosis. But that’s not important. We don’t need a science lesson we need help to treat these pesky strands. But before we try to get rid of these, we need to know the cause. The origin of a split end is when the protective cuticle is removed from the ends of the hairs fibers. And once this protective layer is removed it cannot be replaced. It is at this point that drastic measures must be taken before the hair becomes completely damaged. If left untreated, the hair can split even further down the hair shaft – creating even more damage. Sometimes the hair can even split into three. Splits can range in size from an eighth of an inch to much longer. Your best bet for chasing these splits away is with a good trim. Seek a professional stylist who will make sure you get a proper trim. They also use the sharpest scissors to ensure the hair is cut perfectly – avoiding any unnecessary split ends from occurring again. Make sure you get a trim at least every 6-8 weeks to avoid having to cut off more hair than you had actually planned. Waiting too long before trims can also allow split ends to extend even further, drying the hair even more. This leads to more damage that can be much more noticeable. Just remember these key points for avoiding and treating split ends: Think health over length. It’s best to have healthy hair that’s shorter than long locks that are damaged. Trust me, it doesn’t look good.Keep hair moisturized with a protein conditioner to strengthen the hairs bonds especially if you use chemicals on the hair like color, perms or relaxers.
