Sakura

by Sakura
(Toronto Canada)

Where to begin... I've been completely natural since 2001 (almost 10 years already!). Prior to that I had every style that you can imagine. I've had a Jheri Curl, perm, braids and texturizer. I've grown my hair, chopped it off and coloured it. I've finally made peace with the hair that I was born with. Now, I'm enjoying coming up with interesting styles that suit my personality.

This style was achieved by flat two-strand twists on dry hair. I washed and conditioned my hair the day before and braided it in plats overnight. I find that braiding my hair after washing stretches it out and prepares it for styling.

Flat Twists:

I parted my hair in two from ear to ear creating two sections. I then did six flat twists on the top section and four on the bottom. I sprayed each twist with water to define the curls.

Curly 'Fro Style:

The next morning a took out the twists and separated each one to create volume. I pushed two combs on each side towards the centre of my head, creating the faux 'fro.

Products:

  • Avalon Tea Tree Mint Shampoo

  • Giovanni Smooth as Silk Condition

  • Giovanni Direct Leave-in Conditioner

  • A natural moisturizer (my own concoction) on damp hair: shea butter, coconut oil, jojoba oil and a few drops of rosemary essential oil

  • This style took 20 minutes.

I must say, maintaining naturally curly hair can sometimes be incredibly time-consuming. However, the end result is always worth it. My hair is the healthiest that it's ever been!
