Permanent Color for Curly Hair
PERMANENT COLOR: This method is by far the most popular method because you can be as drastic as you want to be. Permanent hair color also lasts much longer. What makes permanent color last so long? Well basically, the permanent tint puts pigments into the hair shaft. The dyes contain small molecules that penetrate the cuticle and enter into the cortex of the hair through the help of the ammonia. Once the tiny molecules are inside, the hydrogen peroxide releases oxygen. This release allows the molecules to join, thus creating larger molecules that are then too large to escape from the cortex. This inability to escape is the leading cause of permanent color. The color does not leave the hair unless the hair is cut off. But again, make sure that you test the skin first prior to coloring you hair as an allergic reaction can occur with para-dyes. The permanent tint in this hair treatment contains a small amount of peroxide and ammonia that allows the color to stay on the hair. This can be quite harsh on the hair. That is why you should only touch up the roots once they grow in rather than color on top of the previous color. Coloring on top of color is very damaging and should be avoided! It’s common for those with permanent color to experience dry hair and even breakage. Hot oil treatments and deep-conditioning treatments are highly recommended every two weeks if you opt for permanent hair color. Pros: Permanent color; covers gray hair; huge selection of color choices. Cons: Dries hair and can lead to breakage; expensive (roots need retouching every 4-6 weeks); allergic reactions may occur from para-dyes.
