There is much controversy about African American women and their obsession with their hair. Natural hair and weight has finally reached the forefront. Usually this topic is secretly discussed amongst black women.
The issues for decades have been not being able to work out after getting our hair relaxed or styled at a salon, refusing to go swimming because of a relaxer, failing to do any physical activity that may "sweat out" a perm/relaxer and have your kinky roots revert and become exposed, running from the rain and humid weather... The list is lengthy.
I know it sounds crazy that this simple thing called hair can dictate ones life but it's the reality many who have black hair feel. It is especially true for those with hair that is tightly coiled. But to many African American woman and other ethnicities with curly hair - these hair dilemmas are not foreign but an everyday thing.
Fast forward to 2009 and these issues still present themselves. But many woman are now choosing to not be a slave to their hair and are embracing their curls. But for others it's still a concern.
Some recent news coverage of this issue has finally made the mainstream media. A tv journalist discusses these challenges these woman face with her co-host.
