Micro braids have been worn by African women for centuries. In the twenty-first century, they’re one of the top hair trends for women of all races. And for good reason. These mini braids can either be elegant additions to most any hairstyle or a complete hairstyle itself.
What exactly are micro braids?
They're tiny braids and are sometimes referred to as invisible braids. They can be any length or size, though.
To have these types of braids done on your entire head can be time consuming, taking up to nine hours or longer, depending on the length and thickness of your hair. The time is well spent, however, as they usually last up to three months, though two months is the recommended length of time to keep them in your hair.
You can also purchase micros as braid extensions or have them put in by a professional hair stylist. The braid extensions are particularly good if you only want a few to spruce up your regular hair style.
Cautions...
Before getting micrbraids, you want to be sure your hair is in good shape. This means getting your hair trimmed. You also want to be sure your hair isn't dry or brittle. If it is, you should have a series of hot oil treatments to ensure your hair is thoroughly moisturized. Also make sure your scalp is in great shape.
Finally, take into consideration the texture and length of your hair. Thick and coarse hair do better with micro braids than fine, thin hair. Long, fine hair is particularly susceptible to breakage, so extra care is needed when having the micro braids done.
No matter what type of hair you have, you can have beautiful microbraids, but be sure to consult with a professional who does them on a regular basis. After all, one of the main advantages of microbraids is so you’ll have fewer hair problems and maintenance—not more!
