Is Hair Loss After Pregnancy Normal?

Is hair loss after pregnancy normal? Is this something that you are likely to experience after your baby is born? Chances are good that you will experience some hair loss after your baby arrives, and this is completely normal. Unfortunately, post pregnancy hair loss is common in women. It is also not something to worry about in most cases. The fact is that your body has gone through a huge change over the course of the last year and in that time period has made changes to the body. Now, it is time to put those changes back to their normal way.

Why Does It Happen?

For most women, pregnancy will bring a number of changes to the body beyond the obvious weight gain. One of those changes happens to the hair. While hair loss can happen during pregnancy, it is much more common for women to experience improvements I their hair during this time.

For example, the hair may become very thick and it may even develop curls when you did not have any. Or, the pregnancy may cause your beautiful curls to go limp. All of these things happen because of the changes in the hormones in your body. As these hormones change to help the body to develop for the baby, they later will cause you to lose your hair, too.

Postpartum hair loss happens when the hormones begin to retreat to their normal levels, or the levels that were in place before the baby was conceived.

In this situation, the body adjusts by getting rid of some of the excess hair. In most women, the difference happens about three to six months after the baby is born. At this time, hormone levels are going back to normal. Hair re-growth will happen, but it can take several months, if not years, to get back to the normal hair you know. While hair loss after pregnancy is something to be prepared for, it is not necessarily something to worry about. Most women find that the hair grows back quickly and that the added thickness during pregnancy made it worth it.

Regardless, for nearly all women that face post pregnancy hair loss, the body's ability to get back into the normal range also means that hair growth returns to normal. If you are concerned about post partum hair loss, talk to your doctor about it, so that you know that it is okay and even expected.
