Bradelocz Interview con'td - Page 4

How long does it take to produce Bradelocz?

Small/Medium/Large... it varies. It depends on the density of the hair (strands per square inch), the thickness, the length, etc. But for me personally, I’ve started and completed Bradelocz in as little as 4 hours. On my very first client, it took me 14 hours!!

With the Bradelocz method, are the hair sections square shaped or circular, random or lined up throughout the hair?

How do you section the hair for added versatility so that one can wear other styles like corn rows etc?

The sections are made in squares and uniform (not staggering/brick-layered). This allows for maximum styling and even parts when/if desired.

How versatile are Bradelocz?

VERY versatile! I’ve done African/French rolls, twist-outs, flip styles, and more. But I want to also point out that locs, period, are versatile. The types of style may be limited by size, but all locs can be styled and sculpted if one has the creativity and imagination (or can get to someone who does!)

What thickness do you suggest are best for someone who wants Bradelocz?

Assuming you mean thickness of the hair, it really doesn’t matter. But they do work best on hair that has a curl pattern (non-straight hair, in other words).

In terms of how thick each individual bradeloc should be, well it depends on what size the person wants their locs to be. I normally suggest pencil-thickness of SECTIONS, not the starter braids but one can go a little smaller if they so choose.

Some have gone a lot smaller...micro-sized...but I never suggest that because there is too much risk of breaking off. I mean, I've even seen Sisterlocks ™ wearers experience locs breaking off, so just because one is interlocking their roots for maintenance doesn't mean they can't ever have breakage.

Sizing also should be done according to hair texture, density and diameter of strands. All these things need to be taken into consideration when choosing sizes, not just aesthetics!

Can anyone produce Bradelocz or should you consult a professional?

Well, it depends on the person and what they want. If someone wants meticulously neat parts/sections and are not capable of doing it themselves, then they should seek assistance. Not necessarily from a professional, but someone who can do a basic braid/plait and this could be a braider, a friend or family member or the young teenage girl down the street!

But it CAN be done by the individual. I, as well as many others, can testify to that! But my Bradelocz ebook is geared towards helping people do it themselves.

If you want to color locs, what product do you suggest using?

I don’t. Although I’ve colored my hair in the past, I don’t anymore and I have personal convictions about coloring that are health-related; therefore, I won’t advise on coloring.

I noticed your hair is very full. How do you maintain such full bodied Bradelocz?

It’s really all in a person’s hair, period. If you have thin hair, your locs won’t be as full as someone with thicker hair.

I asked Toy how she maintains her beautiful thick Bradelocz...

Well, my primary method of maintenance is latching--not palmrolling. I only palmroll about three times/year. On those occasions that I do palmroll, I only use a light oil (such as jojoba oil or cosmetic grade sesame oil) infused with patchouli oil (for scent).

When I latch I use no products at all. I latch about every two months or so, and it takes me about 6-7 hours to do my entire head (because it's so thick). I usually do it in more than one sitting however, and i never use a mirror. (I do it strictly by feel). I'm ususally watching TV so the time goes by fairly quickly.

For shampooing, I use Edgar Cayce's Olive Oil Shampoo. I've used others but this is my absolute favorite.

Your hair is SO BEAUTIFUL and thick! How do you avoid two locs from matting together?

I simply separate the locks (by pulling them apart) after shampooing them, so that they don't combine.

A COMPARISON SHOT OF TOY'S RELAXED HAIR AND NOW BRADELOCKED HAIR

Cherie, can anyone have Bradelocz as full as yours or Toy's hair?

Unfortunately, it is relative as to one’s hair texture, density and thickness. I would never promise anyone their Bradelocz would be as full as mine or Toy's because I’d be misleading them.

Cherie, you have a wealth of knowledge. Curly Hair Salon.com along with our curly readers would like to thank you for your input.
