Bradelocz Interview cont'd - Page 3

How old should you begin locking your child’s hair?

Some people, a LOT of people actually, feel children should be of an age to decide for themselves, etc. But I always say that parents pick and choose what they will decide on their children’s behalves whether it’s the piercing of ears, circumcision, what religion they practice, etc.

So, what’s different about deciding whether or not to lock a child’s hair? I don’t feel there IS an age limit…I’ve seen some children who were practically locked from birth! My youngest daughter was 2 1/2 when she locked. My youngest child (son) is soon to be 2 and I will be locking his hair very soon.

Why do locks seem to grow so quickly and so long?

Basically because when locking, the hair is allowed to do what it does naturally, grow! There is no breakage of the ends from combing, styling, chemically processing, heat-styling, etc.

The ends are nice and sealed up and if the locs and the loc-wearer are healthy, the hair will thrive and grow and grow. Now locs can and do break off just as loose hair does.

But with a healthy diet, healthy scalp, treating the locs with care and watching for things that can cause thinning and weakening of the root beds, one can have minimal to no incidents of loc breakage.

Should you re-tighten your Bradelocs when they are dry or wet?

What happens if you re-tighten when hair is dry?

It doesn’t matter - damp or dry. I’ve done both. Now it is a known fact that our hair is most pliable when wet/damp (which is why loose naptural hair should be wet/damp when combing). But if tightening is done on dry locs, it won’t hurt.

Why do you think locking has become such a popular hairstyle?

Well, first for many, locking isn’t a "hairstyle" per say, but I think it’s become more popular for a few reasons:

People are beginning to dispel the myths about locking such as "locs are dirty and stink" or "locs aren’t versatile" and they are discovering just how freeing locs are! For some, it’s because it’s becoming the "in" thing to do - a fad for many. Once the fad dies down, they will be right back to the relaxer, sad to say.
